Silver City CLAY Festival

GCCE, in partnership with the Silver City Arts and Cultural District Coordinating Council and cultural entrepreneur Lee Gruber, is launching the first-ever Silver City CLAY Festival. Born of Lee Gruber’s passion for clay tiles, pottery, and earthen works, the CLAY Festival will be a “Love Affair With Clay”.

The Festival will bring together a national offering of artists and creators to engage with collectors, buyers, and art fans from around the country. The three-day Festival will offer worksh
ops, lectures, tours, exhibitions and mural projects. Pottery, tiles, and clay sculpture from a wide range of styles will be on display and available for purchase including Art Deco terracotta architectural elements, handmade functional tile, and contemporary mosaic art.

Clay has figured prominently in the history of the Southwest, beginning as a practical, utilitarian and necessary ingredient in the every-day lives of the early indigenous settlements and has evolved into an artistic, expressive and signature staple of Grant County and the surrounding regions. Thousands of years ago the distinctive Mimbreño pottery was developed in this region; today Silver City’s Western New Mexico State University houses the largest collection of Mimbreño pottery in the United States. Additionally, Silver City offers visitors fine dining, myriad art galleries, and world-class recreational activities.
