In 1999 Ms. Sandra Browne founded the Pelican Craft Centre in Barbados,
and helped revitalize the traditional arts, crafts, and music of the Caribbean. The Pelican Centre, the largest of its kind in the Caribbean, is a cluster of workshops near downtown Bridgetown, where craftspeople create and sell "100% Barbadian-made" leather goods, batik, basketry, carvings, jewelry, glass art, paintings, pottery, and other items. The retail section comprises 25 retail shops, a gallery and annex, a wine bar & bistro, a restaurant, and an artist wall. In The Pelican Workshops visitors can see firsthand the creativity of Barbadian craftsmen while they create pottery, woodcarving, basketry, strawwork, fine art, glass blowing, weaving, moulded figure-making, sewing and cigar making.
The Centre is also the home of the Pelican Dooflicky, a festive carnival event replete with pageantry and culture. The Pelican Dooflicky is staged weekly during the tourist season and visitors are encouraged to join the revelers in the carnival parade and show.
Pelican Craft Centre is named after Pelican Island, a small island which existed off Barbados before being incorporated into the Deep Water Harbour. |
